These days you never know what trend is going to stick next. Selfies. K. Soul Cycle. Not for me. Matcha? Meh. But... Podcasts? SIGN ME UP.
Have you finally had enough of those same ten songs that you've been listening to on shuffle for the past year? Me too. So, it's time to shut down the "(insert word here)~~~vibes" playlist and head over to that little purple "antenna" app on your iPhone. Yeah... THAT one. It's for Podcasts. Because so much of what I do in a day is visual - mainly staring at a computer screen for eight hours :/ - I like to use podcasts to give my eyes a break. Perfect for a morning run, long car ride, or those last few minutes before bed... the best part about 'em? They're FREE!
Here are my current top five:
At Home With... takes you into the beautiful homes of ten powerful, creative, and empowering women who are leading figures in their respective industries. If you're into food, beauty, entrepreneurship, and lifestyle, you need to give this one a listen! A few of my favorites: #1 (Jo Elvin - Editor Glamour UK), #6 (Madeleine Shaw - Food Writer), and #7 (Liz Earle - Founder, Liz Early Wellbeing & Liz Earle Beauty).
Unhappy with your job? Dream of being an entrepreneur? Itching to exercise your creative juices? Cathy Heller's podcast will make you want to take the plunge and follow your dreams. The first ten or so minutes of each podcast (Cathy preaching...) can get a little repetitive, but she has some incredible guests and stories about small business owners, freelancers, and people who've made their passion into a successful career (peep - Bobbi Brown!). Heads up, if you listen to this at a job you hate, you may walk straight out of the office!!!
An oldie but a goodie that started back in 2014. Bon Appétit invites some of the best chefs, writers, and eaters (...and pretty much anyone who has something good to say about food!) to share food stories. I especially loved listening to José Andrés (#83) chat about the growing food scene in D.C. and a restauranteur's responsibility to his/her community. With 120 episodes and counting (Gwyneth Paltrow, Giada De Laurentiis, Mario Batali, etc.), there's something for everyone. You can catch a new episode every Wednesday.
Fascinating podcast, beautifully produced. Jenn White dives deep into the story behind the founding of the Oprah Winfrey Show and how it became one of the most iconic talk shows in TV history. The three-part series (featuring Oprah herself) details Oprah's personal struggles, her connection with the audience, the creation of HARPO Studios, and why it was time for the show to come to an end. Great listen for aspiring journalists, Oprah fans, and Chicagoans.
Basically included this series just because you NEEEEED to listen to the Ina Garten episode (#25). If you're as obsessed with the Barefoot Contessa as I am, you're going to be in heaven. Katie Couric's raw, unscripted style provides for an hour of cooking fun on Easter morning in Ina's Hamptons barn. How bad can that be?! The next episode with Sheryl Sandberg (#26) is also worth a download.
Let me know what you're listening to ATM?
